"I reckon Proactive is 98% effective and it keeps the teats very supple with excellent general skin condition”
David & Stephen Jackson are father and son. They farm on the busy A2 road between Belfast and Bangor. David said “I believe in keeping a very professional dairy farm. We are near to the main road and I like to keep a good image for dairy farmers with the general public who after all are our customers”
The guys can really “put their money where their mouths are” because they are The Ulster Grassland Society General Farm Management trophy winners for 2005 and have a gold cup to prove it. Winning the award involves inspections and interviews, not only on the cows but on the environmental management of the farm and all the business figures.
What’s more they like DeLaval Proactive teat dip! Stephen said “We tried other products but they were harsh and rough on the teats. They also clogged up our teat sprayer so we changed to Proactive and have been using it with great success ever since”
The cows are housed in cow cubicles with automatic passage scrapers. The cubicles have DeLaval mats and are kept well bedded with sawdust and hydrated lime to keep the cows clean and dry.
The herd average is 9,000litres per cow per year at 4.03% butterfat and 3.28% protein with the bactascan at 2.75 rolling average and SCC at 123. David said we changed to Proactive some time ago. I like the 63litr size as it’s easy to carry. I reckon it’s 98% effective and it keeps the teats very supple with excellent general skin condition”
The cows are milked in a DeLaval Herringbone 18 x 18 parlour which is equipped with recorder jars and automatic cluster removal. There is an in parlour feeding system
The service is carried out by Francis Dunn Ltd of Donaghadee. David and Stephen are on Andrew Dunn’s delivery round. Andrew said “It’s a pleasure to go to Fairview farm and see David and Stephen’s results. It’s good to have training on the product but there’s really nothing like visiting a satisfied customer”
