DeLaval and Food for Development Office

The Food for Development Office initiates and supports feeding programmes such as school milk programmes and integrated dairy development projects in developing countries.
The aim of these projects is to achieve sustainable social and economic dairy development by promoting local milk production and value chain improvements.
By combining training and education of dairy farmers, |
equipment financing based on commercial terms, public-private partnerships and consumer education activities and by addressing all links in the milk value chain a base for sustainable economic development is established. Feeding programmes based on locally produced food often work as a catalyst creating demand and stimulating the development of the agriculture and dairy sector.
DeLaval has a deep understanding of dairy farming, milk production and milk collection. Together with the knowledge offered by Tetra Pak in milk processing, milk packaging, food safety and distribution we are a perfect match to cover the milk value chain - from cow to consumer.
The integrated approach of Food for Development is a strong vehicle and a unique business model for profitable growth, increased global presence and identification of market opportunities. The model was recognised as a “business model for sustainable growth” in the pre-meeting of the World Economic Forum in December 2005.
Food for Development is currently working with more than 20 dairy development projects or school milk programmes.
For more than 40 years, Tetra Pak has been involved in providing milk to school children around the globe. Every year, more than 1 000 million litres of milk is delivered to schools, in Tetra Pak packages, to the benefit of around 40 million school children. Tetra Pak’s Food for Development Office (FfDO) is the mechanism where the extensive base of knowledge and experience gathered over the years in school feeding and agricultural development programmes it put to use. Food for Development is part of Tetra Laval’s overall Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. Together DeLaval and Tetra Pak participates in integrated agricultural development projects addressing the entire food value chain from "cow to consumer".
The UN member countries have signed a pledge, the Millennium Development Goals, to halve world poverty by the year 2015. To realise these goals education, sustainable farming, food security and nutrition issues are key success factors. Today, conservative estimates show that 170 million children are chronically hungry, every day!
In 2005 DeLaval and Tetra Pak’s Food for Development was chosen by Food and Agricultural Organization of UN (FAO) as a good example of co-operation between FAO and the private sector.
